8200Schedule: Evening/Night Shift -Duke University Health System
seeks to hire a Nurse Manager of Operations who will embrace our
mission of Transforming Lives Transforming Care. This position will
manage the Adult Medicine Stepdown, Pulmonary Medicine Stepdown,
and General Medicine Stepdown Units. - -The Adult General Medicine
Stepdown Units (2300) consist of 47 beds divided between two
adjacent units, providing exceptional care for patients with
complex medical diseases, including cardiac, pulmonary, liver,
renal, sickle cell, diabetes, infectious diseases, wound care,
med-psych, and GI. Unit 4100 is an adult medicine stepdown unit
with 16 beds, offering exemplary care for patients with conditions
such as sepsis, sickle cell, GI bleed, end-stage renal failure,
diabetes, cirrhosis, and behavioral health disorders. The Pulmonary
Medicine Stepdown Unit (7800) has 28 beds, including 6 ventilator
beds, catering to patients with advanced lung diseases like ALS,
pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, pre- and post-lung
transplant conditions, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, as well
as various other medical conditions. The newly renovated General
Medicine Stepdown Unit (8200) comprises 16 beds, where the nursing
staff provides exemplary care for patients with complex diagnoses
such as stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, sepsis, liver/kidney
failure, BKAs/AKAs, diabetes, GI bleed, sickle cell, rheumatic
disorders, psychiatric, and behavioral health disorders. -Job
SummaryManage and supervise functions of assigned patient care area
on a 24 hour basis; ensure effective delivery of clinical patient
care and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and
procedures. -What you will do:
- Participate in the development of the clinical areas' strategic
and operational plans
- Actively support and promote a professional practice model that
encourages staff participation in the development of clinical
standards that is collaborative, collegial and utilizes current
trends and data in professional practice (clinical and
administrative). Openly support and consistently communicate
mission of the unit/department and the organization. Serve as the
collective voice for unit(s) staff to communicate with
administration. Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure
optimal patient care.
- Interface with patients and families to ensure that care is
consistent with their expectations. Ensure active use of the
nursing process for patients from pre-admission/admission to
discharge and beyond (based on the clinical setting). Serve as a
professional role model and mentor to staff by responding
positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change
process. Serve as a change agent to facilitate communication and
transition that supports the mission of the organization.
- Ensure a unit-based work force that is diverse and cognizant of
the value diversity brings to the workplace.
- Assure coordination/participation of unit based staff on
department and organization wide councils/committees. Manage,
supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care for assigned
patient care area on a 24 hour basis. Ensure compliance with
clinical patient care standards and established policies and
procedures.
- Maintain clinical competencies for assigned clinical area and
provides bedside care as needed. Assess/coach and evaluate staff
level of practice. Develop programs that foster continued clinical
development from novice to expert to positively impact on patient
care and career satisfaction of staff.
- Maintain required unit records, reports and statistics for
administrative purposes, ensures compliance with established
hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality control (POCT);
PI, safety, environmental and infection control. Communicate
requirements to staff, and hold staff accountable to established
requirements. Coordinate the development, implementation and
evaluation of policies and procedures designed to improve
operational efficiency. Coordinate QC/PI activities with
appropriate staff.
- Oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited
to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions,
terminations and other related activities.
- Plan, schedule and organize work for group ensuring proper
distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient
utilization of personnel, space and facilities; overall
accountability for the requisition, care and maintenance of unit
inventory, equipment and supplies.
- Coordinate the activities of nursing staff with other hospital
personnel; accountable for the effective and efficient operation of
the unit and staff including ensuring that orders, treatments,
plans of care, clinical pathways are being carried out in a manner
supportive of patient care and recovery. Ensure documentation of
patient care is complete and accurate in accordance with hospital
and unit policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations to
determine fiscal requirements of assigned unit(s), and prepare
budgetary recommendations. Monitor the level of resources utilized
in service delivery and determines the appropriateness of resource
consumption in the service. Develop action plans in conjunction
with the Director of Clinical Operations to ensure budget and
resource efficiency, and satisfaction with patient care
delivery.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described
herein.
- Round on units twice per shift to include stat sheeting with
Charge RN. Review units' Zero Harm profiles and support Charge RN
to resolve. Review units' priority discharges; ensure teed up for
discharge; escalate barriers via CareHub expeditor.
- Assist with bedflow management.
- Assist with escalations (EVS, Supply Chain, DP/DVs, etc.)
during off hours. Update Tier 2 board.
- Provide education and in-services for rollouts, product
changes, new policies/processes, etc.
- Attend Tier 1 huddles on a rotating basis
- Monitor unit process metrics and update docs on Area
Improvement Center
- Assist with onboarding (creating orientation schedules,
rounding on preceptors/orientees, etc.)
- Onboard staff
- Support corrective action and employee performance
management
- Participates in RRTs, BRTs, Codes, Fall huddles, VOV huddles,
etc
- Provide direct patient care to facilitate patient flow when
MSCC is at Capacity Level 3 -What you will need: Education
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required. Master's degree in
Nursing strongly preferred. -Experience
- Three years of nursing experience is required. -Degrees,
Licensure, and/or Certification
- Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North
Carolina.
