OVERVIEW The Vice President, Human Resources - Acute Care for Duke
University Health System (DUHS) oversees HR operations and service
delivery across a network of acute care clinical enterprise and
collaborates closely with the health system's ambulatory platform,
School of Medicine and Duke University colleagues. This position is
responsible for developing and implementing strategies, programs,
and policies that support the operations to successfully deliver on
the enterprise-wide clinical strategic plan. The primary focus is
to ensure HR practices provide value-added strategic consulting
solutions, enhance the employee experience and align with the
future of work in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. Key
Responsibilities Under the direction of the Chief Human Resources
Officer & Senior Vice President, DUHS, the successful candidate
will:
- Provide strategic thought leadership, focused on improving the
employee experience, people processes, and service delivery in
pursuit of positioning the organization to be destination
employer.
- Partner closely with human resources and operations leadership
across the enterprise to assess, develop and implement an optimal
strategy and aligned structure; establish operational standards;
and ensure procedures are implemented that drive efficient,
scalable, effective and compliant services in support of the
broader clinical enterprise strategy.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and help to
strengthen organizational performance, developing and monitoring
human resources measures of success. This is a highly visible
position that requires a proactive, collaborative leader with a
process improvement, innovation and coaching mindset.
- Engage with DUHS, DU and SOM HR as well as operational
leadership to identify organizational gaps and implement
programs/processes to meet those needs. This role will lead the
delivery of best-in-class, strategic solutions to ensure
value-added, customer-centric leadership and talent
experiences.
- Effectively manage in a matrixed environment with a combination
of solid- and dotted-line reporting relationships across the health
system. Direct reports to this role will evolve over time as the HR
structure is being consolidated to shape a progressive human
resource practice aligned with the strategic direction of the
organization.
- Ensure policies, processes, and practices appropriately embed
diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) initiatives
to foster a diverse and inclusive environment that enables all team
members to thrive, feel valued and be heard.
- Possess a strong understanding of performance management,
change management, and organizational development.
- Prepare business cases, operating plans, and presentation
materials for senior leadership, including DUHS Board of
Directors.
- Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the
ability to communicate complex data and strategies into simple,
actionable recommendations.
- Utilize a data-driven mindset to help lead efforts in workforce
planning, ensuring the right talent is in place to meet current and
future organizational needs. Partner with senior leadership to
create workforce models that support future healthcare trends,
including telemedicine, digital health, and evolving patient care
models.
- Build the capabilities of and mentor direct and indirect
reports to effectively align talent skills and competencies with
organizational needs. Key leadership attributes and Qualifications
- Minimum of 12 years of relevant business and progressive human
resources experience with at least 8 years of experience leading
teams at various levels within HR. HR professional certification
preferred (PHR, SPHR, SHRM, etc.)
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience,
Master's in human resources management, business administration, or
another related field preferred
- Expert and broad knowledge of end-to-end talent operations and
management
- Knowledge of labor laws and healthcare regulations relevant to
acute care hospital environments.
- Expert communication skills with a diversity of communication
styles; savvy communicator both orally and in writing
- Excellent leadership, critical thinking and coaching skills
that foster collaboration and development across and within
teams
- Highly developed project management skills
- Experience with M&A and integration planning /
implementation, a plus
- Must be a highly motivated, innovative, change oriented
strategic thinker with a high EQ and outstanding executive presence
- Must be able to connect with and demonstrate empathy for
teammates at all levels along with significant influence and
negotiation skills
- Must have keen analytical abilities as well as a command of
technical skills, including Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft
